Bakwanisizge imyaka 43 panyegha

I am bit fond of my mum and dad especially because of the wedding day. It has often been difficult for me which of the two days to celebrate most. Why is it difficult?

They tell us (the children) that they wedded in church on 26th September and only managed t o have the reception four days later on 30th September, 1966. Now for a modern young adult who sees receptions taking place the same day of the officiation, it becomes somehow interesting to reconcile their dates. So when do I send a congratulatory message? On both days? May be.

They say that they wedded on Monday 26th September under the Livingstonia Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbetery (CCAP) at Ifumbo in Chitipa. I remember to have ever attended wedding offciation on a Monday only once. In those days, they say that the church minister could visit the prayer houses once in a while hence officiation was dependent on his availability.

Traditionally, they fulfilled all the requirements of marriage by paying lobola and arranging for the celebrations at home which could only take place after the church wedding. And this did take place on a Friday 30th September 1966. That year mum was 18 and dad 23.

These days in Malawi, almost expects that each marriage officiation will take place either on Saturday or Sunday amongst Chrsitians. These then are followed by receptions most of which in urban areas have turned commercial.

So mum and dad congrats. That is the day when Rhoda Seba Mwanja turned into Mrs Rhoda Seba Kaonga and Mleya Before Kaonga became Mr Mleya Kaonga...

We are proud of you.
